The Village of Mattawan - your place to call home
Mattawan is located in the northeast corner of Antwerp Township in Van Buren County, just 43 miles east of Lake Michigan, 150 miles west of Detroit and 150 miles east of Chicago. The Village is served by the major east-west transportation routes of I-94 and Red Arrow Highway. These routes provide major access to and through Michigan and Indiana, as well as the Midwest. Nearby cities include Benton Harbor-St. Joseph 38 miles to the southwest; Grand Rapids 60 miles to the north; and South Bend, Indiana, 72 miles to the southwest.
Its proximity to the Kalamazoo area just 7 miles away lends to its economic support. Its local economy is supported by a strong manufacturing base, including plastic products and pharmaceutical research & development. The Village of Mattawan has a small town, rural character. It offers small-town charm in the downtown area, which features a shady city park on one side of the main street area and a row of unique shops and eating establishments. The original core of the Village is centered around its traditional downtown “Main Street”.
Ambleside Condominiums are located within a few hundred yards of all three Mattawan schools and are therefore in easy walking distance.
Mattawan is served by Mattawan Consolidated School District. Besides the Village, the School District serves large sections of both eastern Van Buren County and western Kalamazoo County. The District consists of an early elementary, a later elementary, a middle school, and a high school on a 128-acre campus centrally located within Mattawan.
Mattawan Consolidated School District's approximately 3,700 students receive a rigorous academic experience within outstanding facilities. The four schools that comprise the school district are centrally located, providing easy access to each school and maximizing interaction among the students and staffs. The middle school and high school facilities are relatively new, with the high school building in its sixteenth year of operation. Many local, private, and parochial schools also graduate students who advance to Mattawan High School.
This family-oriented, education-minded community of Mattawan is attracting residents from the surrounding area and is becoming home to individuals and families new to the Kalamazoo area. Mattawan Consolidated School District continues to grow and it is fully prepared to continue its great tradition of excellence.
A rigorous curriculum and research-based instructional strategies are the foundation for the learning environment for students at Mattawan Consolidated School District. As a Professional Learning Community, teachers, students parents, and community members collaborate to ensure an exemplary program. Its district's core curriculum exceeds the Michigan Department of Education requirements in all courses and integrates core state and national standards within the subject content. In addition, the district offers enrichment programs to challenge high-achieving students and a comprehensive special education program in order to meet the needs of all learners.
An exemplary curriculum, strong instructional standards for teaching and learning, opportunities for involvement in extra-curricular activities and community programs, unparalleled parent support, highly-qualified professional staff and support personnel, all combine to assist each child in succeeding in reaching their full potential.
